What This Episode is About
Picture this. It is 7am. You are standing in the salon, coffee in hand, and your phone is already going. Text messages about moving appointments. Questions about whether you take large dogs. And you have not even turned the clippers on yet.
That is how most pet business owners start their day. And honestly? That is what we wanted to talk about in this first episode.
The Admin Wall
Nobody goes to vet school thinking, "I cannot wait to learn about practice management software." Nobody does a Certificate III in dog grooming because they love spreadsheets. You get into this because you care about animals. Full stop.
And then one day you look up and you are spending more time on invoices than you are on actual dogs.
The Petboost team has spoken to over a hundred Australian pet businesses, and the stories are remarkably similar:
- A premium grooming salon in Sydney with seven staff said that "so many annoying tasks and mistakes get in the way of us being the best we can be"
- A vet with sixteen staff said she did not know that "you have to set up and maintain so many processes, systems and data in the background"
- An ops manager at a dog training business said he did not "know how long I can keep up doing the job of one and a half people"
The Mental Load
It is not just the hours. It is the mental load. It is lying in bed at night thinking, "Did I confirm that booking? Did that payment go through? Did I update the vaccination record?"
There is "you the groomer" and then there is "you the admin person who works nights and weekends for free." And that second version of you does not get paid.
The Shift
The shift is not really about software. It is about getting your headspace back.
When your booking system actually understands that a client is bringing a dog, not just a person, when it knows the dog's breed, their size, their vaccination status, whether they need extra time because they are anxious, that changes everything.
What You Can Do This Week
- Write a list of every admin task you do in a week. Every booking confirmation, invoice, vaccination check, text message reminder, and payment follow-up.
- Ask yourself next to each one: "Does this actually need me? Or could a system handle this?"
- Look at your evenings and weekends. How many hours are you spending on admin outside of business hours?
