The table is the most visible thing you buy and the least interesting decision you make. Almost any decent table will do the job for years.
The arm bolted to the side of it is what determines whether your day is calm or a wrestle, and it usually gets whatever was left in the budget.
Fixed, hydraulic, electric
Fixed height. Cheap, indestructible, fine if every dog you groom is small and you are always the one grooming. The problem arrives the moment you share the salon with someone six inches taller, or take on a labrador.
Hydraulic. A foot pedal and a ram. The middle option and the one most salons land on. No power needed, no cable, and it is fast enough. The pedal position is worth checking in person, because a badly placed one gets in the way of your feet all day.
Electric. A motor and a switch. What you are buying is the ability to bring the table right down, walk the dog on, and raise it. For a salon doing big dogs that is not a luxury, it is injury prevention, and it is why we would spend here before anywhere else on the list.
In Australia, Aeolus and Shernbao are the volume brands and both are carried by the main trade suppliers.
If you are tall, check the maximum height before anything else. This is a recurring complaint in the Australian groomer groups and it is not a small one: plenty of tables top out below a comfortable working height for anyone much over average, so you spend the day hunched, and the taller tables that do exist are often wider than you want. Measure the height you actually want to work at, then buy to that number rather than to a brand.
Now the arm
A cheap arm flexes. You will notice it the first time a dog leans, because the post bows and the dog wins.
What to look for: a post with real wall thickness rather than thin tube, a clamp that grips the table edge across a wide face instead of a single point, and a height adjustment that locks without needing a spanner.
Get a double arm if you do any dog that objects to having its back end handled. Two points of support turns a fight into a shrug, and it is safer for the dog than one loop and your forearm.
On loops: keep several, and replace them when they fray. They cost almost nothing and they are the last thing between a dog and the floor.
The ramp is the real safety item
The most common serious injury in this trade is not a bite. It is a back, and it happens lifting a big dog on and off a table, several times a day, for years.
A ramp fixes it. So does an electric table brought to the floor. Doing neither and relying on being strong works until it does not, and the day it stops working you are out for weeks.
If you employ anyone, this is squarely inside your duty as a business, not a personal preference.
Surface and the small stuff
The rubber matting on a table top is a consumable. It hardens, it glazes, and it stops gripping, at which point dogs start scrabbling and you start bracing them with your hip. Check whether replacement matting is available for the model you buy. On some it is, on plenty it is not.
Keep a hex key taped inside the leg. Table arms loosen, always at the wrong moment.
What we would not buy
We would not buy a folding portable table as a salon's main table. They are excellent for shows, home visits and a spare. As the table you use forty hours a week, the wobble will wear you down.
We would not buy an electric table without checking what happens in a power cut, because some will not lower manually and you do not want to find that out with a dog on it.
And we would not buy a table by weight rating alone. A table rated to 100 kilograms that flexes at 30 is a worse table than one rated to 60 that does not move.
What the internet gets wrong here
Two brands dominate American grooming discussion and both need an availability check before you get attached. Ask an Australian supplier what they stock and what they can service. A table is heavy freight, and a warranty claim that requires shipping it overseas is not a warranty.
