The vibe code trap
AI can build a booking page in a weekend, and it might look great. This page is about everything that comes after the weekend: the payments, the messages, the rules and the upkeep, and whether that is a job you want on top of running a pet business.
An honest assessment
Petboost is the system we built for our own pet business, then kept building for hundreds more. Here is what you hand over.
Monitoring, backups, security updates and law changes are handled by our team. Petboost runs on Microsoft Azure in Australia East with three live copies of the database.
Deposits, card on file, memberships, retries and refunds are built in. Card numbers are held by Stripe and never on our servers.
Group sizes, rooms, staff and resources are checked before a time is offered, so the last place can only be taken once.
Vaccination requirements, sizes, eligibility, prerequisites and pricing rules are switched on, not coded.
New releases run first inside Hound Health Bondi, a pet business we still own, before they reach yours.
A Sydney team who know pet businesses answers when you need help. No ticket queue overseas.
Transparency first
Building your own has real advantages. Here is what you trade away.
Your own system does exactly what you say, the way you say it. Petboost covers a huge amount, but it will not match every idea pixel for pixel.
With an in-house build the code is yours. With Petboost your data is yours, but the software is ours.
Petboost is not free. Weigh it against the developer time, hosting and your own hours an in-house system needs every month.
If something you need is not in Petboost yet, you ask us rather than build it tonight. We ship fast, but it is not the same as doing it yourself.
If control matters more than anything else, building your own may be the right call. We would rather you choose it with your eyes open.
The vibe code trap, priced
Rough estimates for a small to mid-sized pet business, using typical Australian developer rates. Your numbers will differ, so plug in your own.
The booking page takes a weekend. Payments, memberships, capacity, messaging, staff logins and pet rules take a few hundred hours. At $100 to $150 an hour, that adds up fast.
Hosting, SMS and email services, monitoring, backups, security updates and a developer on call for fixes and law changes, every month, for as long as you run it.
Answering "why did this booking not go through?", testing fixes and briefing developers. That is time not spent on staff, clients, marketing or the floor.
Hosting, payments, messaging, monitoring, updates, law changes and Sydney support are all included. Business Pro is $65/month (waived at $7,500+ in card payments).
Put in your own numbers. Every input is an estimate you control.
The subscription is waived in any month you process $7,500+ in card payments.
Illustrative estimates, not quotes. Your time is counted at its opportunity cost, not cash paid. Lost bookings are revenue at risk, not profit, and can be set to zero. Card processing fees apply either way and are excluded.
"Clear, Client-Friendly Booking Tool with Responsive Support"
"As a dog trainer it is difficult to find software that does all of the things that you need it to do. Petboost is tailored specifically to the animal industry having features that no other booking system I have used previously has. I have worked in the industry for a number of years in grooming, daycare & training & have always had to use a mish mash of a number of systems & trackers to book & collect money. For my training business this software does everything I need it to do so I don't have to keep track of a number of different aspects across various platforms. It has simplified my life immensely."

"The automatic payments feature is a blessing"
"Streamlined Invoicing and Booking for Small Teams. I really like how much quicker and easier Petboost Business has become after the upgrades. The automatic payments feature is a blessing as it helps me not to stress, and the self-booking option for clients is amazing for my business! These features ease the mental load and reduce manual admin tasks, allowing me to focus on what I do best."

Common questions about moving from an in-house system to pet business software.
The full detail behind the page above, section by section.
We started Hound Health Bondi in 2018 and it is still trading. Nothing on the market fitted how we ran it, so we built our own. That system became Petboost.
So we will never tell you building your own is a silly idea. You know your business better than any software company does, and the things that make it different are worth protecting.
What we learned, years in, is that the build is the small part. A pet business is already a long list of jobs. Custom software adds one more, and it never finishes.
Think of it this way: it would be like Petboost deciding to build its own computers before writing any software. We could, in theory. But it is not our core business, and every hour spent on it would come straight out of the work our customers pay us for. Building your own booking, payments and messaging system is the same trade for a pet business.
We often see businesses build their own, which is fine, and some of them come back to us a few months later. This page is the conversation we would have with you before you start.
First, here is what you are actually signing up to build.
None of this means the build was bad. These are the jobs that only appear once real clients, real cards and real staff are using it.
What we see a few months in
Charging a card on schedule is the easy part. Retries, expired cards, pauses and part-term refunds are where most of the build time goes, and they break quietly.
The most expensive bug never sends an error. A rule that is slightly too strict tells clients you are full when you are not, and they quietly book elsewhere. At $80 to $160 an appointment, one lost booking a week is $4,160 to $8,320 a year.
Double bookings rarely show in testing. They show on your busiest morning, in front of two clients.
Payment rules, SMS opt-out requirements and privacy law keep moving. Each change is a new job for whoever built your system.
The developer, the agency or the AI session that built it holds the know-how. When they move on, so does your ability to fix it.
A new service, a membership, a second site or a new staff member each means more building, rather than switching a setting on.
Running a pet business is already marketing, staffing, finance, compliance and the dogs. Software support quietly joins that list, usually after hours.
You built your system around how you work, so moving off it can feel like giving something up. Expect a few weeks where Petboost feels unfamiliar. Then one day you notice you have not thought about the software all week.
Honest about the adjustment period
Your own system stays open while you get to know Petboost. We are with you for every question.
Clients book themselves, payments land against bookings and reminders send without you.
No fixes, no updates, no late nights on the code. The upkeep is ours now.
We are in Sydney. A real person who understands pet businesses answers, not a ticket queue.
We extract and import your customers, pets and bookings, generally inside 24 hours.
Keep your own system running alongside Petboost for as long as you need.

Building it was the hard part. Let us keep it running.
Design Principle
We count clicks like a chef counts ingredients. Create an appointment in one click. View a customer in one click. Toggle AI with a keyboard shortcut.
There is no wrong answer. This is about being honest about the job you are taking on.
A quick self-assessment
No pressure, genuinely
Some businesses build their own and it serves them well. If that is you, brilliant, and we mean that.
We are genuinely curious what you are building that a typical system could not do for you. Tell us. It might be something we should build for everyone, or it might confirm you are right to build it yourself.
If you come back in six months with a different answer, we will still be here.
A lot of businesses still do this out of habit, but under current ATO guidance it's genuinely more admin than necessary.
