The Birman is a medium to large semi longhaired cat with a silky coat and no undercoat, so it sheds less than most longhaired cats and weekly combing is enough. It is gentle, patient, intelligent and moderately active. It is described as an excellent choice for families with children and other pets, and it does not cope well with being left alone for long.
